Women are going missing; others are found – dug up after years. There is a psychopath, who has grizzly “projects”, which involve stalking women and abducting them. James – and his Detective Superintendent, Roy Grace – is more interested in the inside of the heads of his fictional psychos. Grace is a great character, with his own secrets, the most enduring being that of his long-vanished wife, Sandy. We, and Grace, are no nearer to knowing why she disappeared or whether he will go to her if she is found.
