JAMES’S latest shares plot similarities with Gay’s novel, and although it is nowhere near so subtle, it still exerts a sweat-inducing grip. Ollie and Caro Harcourt have swapped their Brighton home for a dilapidated pile in the countryside. But as cracks appear in the walls, ceilings collapse and the locals hint at a deadly legacy, Ollie is uncertain whether it’s the house that is falling apart, or himself. James ratchets up the tension with terrific economy and doesn’t balk at seeing his story through to its gruesome conclusion.
