Hello,
Hello and greetings from Cape Cod - a place I have always wanted to visit. I’m talking on August 11th at the SEAK Conference in Hyannis for doctors and lawyers who want to write novels, and arrived early in order to escape (a tad reluctantly) the Olympics razzmatazz in the UK and focus on my new Roy Grace novel in peace and quiet. And I have discovered here my new favourite lunchtime snack - lobster rolls - dangerously yummy!
For those of you in the US (and for those anywhere in the world with a digital radio) I am being interviewed on National Public Radio’s “Crime In The City” slot on Monday, August 6th on the “Morning Edition”. During the interview - recorded a few weeks ago - I walked around parts of Roy Grace’s Brighton with my “real-life” Roy Grace - former Detective Chief Superintendent Dave Gaylor, talking about what a criminally good city Roy Grace’s Brighton is! Here is the link for the interview when they post it (normally on the day of the interview).
Now it is time for me to ask a small favour of you all: I’m really thrilled that for the first time ever I have been nominated for an award in the USA! It is a Barry Award for the Best British Crime Novel - Dead Man’s Grip. I’m up against some stiff competition:
NOW YOU SEE ME by S.J. Bolton
THE INFERNALS (in U.K., HELL’S BELLS) by John Connolly
BAD SIGNS by R.J. Ellory
THE HOUSE AT SEA’S END by Elly Griffiths
OUTRAGE by Arnaldur Indridason
You can vote one of three ways:
- Send an email with your vote for “Peter James, Dead Man’s Grip” to george@deadlypleasures.com
- Fax your votes to 801-296-1993
- Mail your vote to DP-Barry Awards, PO Box 997, Bountiful, UT 84011
The deadline is September 1, so cast your vote today!
Now, if you are planning a trip to Brighton - or live within Roy Grace’s manor - I’m delighted to tell you that from the end of August there will be a dedicated “Roy Grace” walk in the city. They are being hosted by Lyn Neville, who is very engaging, and you can find information, or make a reservation at:

I am also delighted to announce that Dead Man’s Grip will be published in paperback in the US on September 18 and Not Dead Yet will be published in the US in hardcover on November 27. We’re giving you a sneak-peek at the US covers below. Click the covers to preorder!
In last month’s newsletter I told you the great news that we were in the process of signing the TV miniseries deal for Perfect People. This has now been concluded, and I am really thrilled! It is with Sally Head Productions. Sally Head is one of the UK’s foremost TV producers, responsible for, among other great series, Prime Suspect. I will bring you more news as everything progresses.
And one final bit of good news - we are about to sign on board a director for the movie of Dead Simple, which I am currently co- scripting!
Have a great rest of the summer for all those of you in the Northern Hemisphere - and a mild rest of the winter for those of you in the Southern Hemisphere!
Please remember I always love to hear from you on Twitter, on blog posts, on Facebook and by email at scary@pavilion.co.uk.
